Juicy homemade French toast

Torrijas, or French toast, is a delicious dessert made from stale bread. It was already known in a similar form in the Roman Empire and is still prepared in various countries today.

In Spain, this starter is very popular, especially at Easter during Lent, because it is so filling.

There are also several different recipes here in Spain. A wide variety of white breads are suitable for preparation.

The preparation

Step 1:

Cut the bread into slices approx. 2 cm thick and set aside.

Step 2:

Pour the milk into a saucepan with the lemon zest, cinnamon stick and approx. half of the sugar and heat. Bring to the boil briefly, stir, then remove from the heat and allow to cool slightly. Then remove the lemon zest and cinnamon stick from the milk.

Step 3:

Spread the bread slices evenly on a baking tray and pour half of the milk over them. After about 5 minutes, when the bread has absorbed the milk, turn the bread slices over and pour the other half of the milk over them. Wait another 5 minutes.

Step 4:

Beat the eggs in a bowl. Mix the remaining sugar with the cinnamon powder and set aside.

Step 5:

Pour plenty of oil into a frying pan and heat. Dip the milk-soaked bread slices in the egg mixture on both sides and carefully place them in the hot oil. Fry on both sides until golden brown.

Step 6:

Then place on a plate lined with kitchen paper and sprinkle with the cinnamon sugar. Leave to cool. Done!
